  • Does Sun Brite offer different types of sealers?
Yes, in addition to our fine oil-based natural-look sealers, we offer selected water-based sealers with the same look and durability. We recommend these products for use near lakes and rivers where the environment is sensitive to oils.

  • Do I have a choice of colors?
We have a color sample board to show off the sealers we use. The color of your deck may end up slightly different than the original sample board because our samples are done on new wood (not aged, like your deck). If you were not home when the estimate was left for you, we left you a color sample board in the package. Additionally, wood is a natural material with variations in the density and grain throughout. Each piece of wood has its own personality and takes on color from our sealers with lots of variations (even within a single board). A customer might assume that these color variations mean that the sealant has not been applied evenly all over the board, but this is never the case. We apply the sealers with a sprayer we invented particularly for deck floors. This sprayer always applies more sealer than the wood will take. We then back-brush to eliminate the excess sealer before we leave.

  • How will I know when Sun Brite is coming?
The Operations Manager, Robert Stone, oversees all work done by Sun Brite and makes sure that you are satisfied with our efforts. He will call you the day before we come out to let you know when to expect us.

  • What do I need to do before Sun Brite comes out?
We ask that you remove small potted plants and valuable accessories from your deck before we arrive. Place these items in the house or in the yard (well away from the work area). Our technicians will move larger items, such as chairs or tables. Awkward items, such as barbecues, are simply moved around on the deck by the technicians as needed. Extremely heavy items, such as large planters or tubs, will be left in place and worked around. We do not ask our employees to lift items heavier than 40 lbs.

  • What about the plants and flowers near my deck?
In most cases, we cause no damage to the plants in your yard. There are several factors related to the work we are doing for you that might cause temporary damage, and we want you to know about them. First of all, we use strong detergents to deep-clean the wood. These special detergents are environmentally-friendly and biodegradable, but they can sometimes shock the current growth on some plants. Leaves might spot, curl, or darken from these detergents. After a few weeks, new growth replaces current growth and the plants look fine again. Secondly, we use a lot of water to clean your deck. Too much water is hard on plants and flowers, but this is unavoidable. Finally, in spite of all of our efforts to protect your plants, some of the sealer might get on the leaves. If this happens, the current growth on these plants could be harmed. New growth will not be affected by this. Our primary focus is the protection of your wood (extending its life). At the same time, we recognize the investment your landscape represents and assure you that we will make every effort to protect your plants as well. We use lightweight drop cloths over plants to minimize our impact.

  • What exactly will be sealed by Sun Brite?
Sun Brite normally seals the surfaces of the deck exposed to weather. This includes the top of the deck, the sides of the deck, but not the underside of the deck. If you want the underside done (because you have a patio underneath, for example) this option is available. There are other options available, such as sanding the handrails or replacing weak boards. Ask your Sun Brite representative for any extra services related to your deck that you want done.

  • What if it rains before the deck is done?
Once the deck has been washed, we allow adequate drying time before we seal it. If it rains during this time period, we might delay sealing until the wood is ready to absorb the sealer. We use an electronic moisture meter to determine if the wood has the proper moisture content for sealing. If it rains after the sealer is applied (even just 30 minutes after!) there is no problem. The sealer is already absorbed into the wood within minutes after application. Since the sealer is not a paint or a coating, it isn't damaged by rain.

  • How do I know when Sun Brite is done and I can begin using my deck?
Your deck is ready to use immediately after we complete the work. We recommend that customers wipe their feet when walking into their home from the deck for the first three weeks after the job is finished to avoid the slight possibility that any material could be tracked in. You will be given an invoice on the day we wash with a note informing you of our expected completion date. You are expected to pay for our work upon completion. If you have any concerns about any part of the work, please contact us as soon as possible so that we may explain what was done or make any appropriate corrections. If you do not expect to be home when the job is finished, please leave your payment for us in a pre-arranged location. A copy of your Invoice will be left for you along with some information on caring for your deck. Thanks for your business, and welcome to the Sun Brite family.

  • How long will the treatment last?
Generally, the protection (water and UV repellants) built into our commercial-grade sealers can last as long as 4-5 years. This protection is guaranteed to last 3 years. (See the Limited Guarantee included with your Invoice for details.) The color is a different story, however. Depending on a) how much you use your deck; and b) how much sun it gets (and afternoon sun vs. morning sun makes a difference); and c) the current condition of your deck lumber; Most customers become dissatisfied with the appearance of the deck in about two years. In some cases, a customer's deck may need to be done every year. In a few cases, every three years is adequate. Our Maintenance Program is the best answer to maintaining the look and protection over time.

  • How does the Sun Brite Referral Program work?
Sun Brite customers who send their family, friends, and co-workers to us deserve a "Thank You" from Sun Brite. We will send you a $25 check in appreciation of your referral. If you do have someone call Sun Brite for a quote, please have them identify you as the person who recommended us when they first call. If they don't do this, we have no way of knowing that you deserve a check. Unfortunately, when new customers don't make things clear to us by the time we enter their paperwork, we miss the chance to treat you right. That's why we tell all new customers about this Program at the time of their estimate.
